Energy City

macMonkey Digital Studios helped create an interactive exhibit that shows some of the facts and challenges behind power generation and the power grid. The exhibit takes you through a sunny day where you and your friends have to balance power generation from a variety of power sources (wind, coal, solar, hydroelectric) with changing power demand from businesses and individuals throughout the day. As the day heats up, so does power demand from people trying to stay cool!

This exhibit was a complicated design with multiple inputs and corresponding outputs, allowing up to 5 visitors to play together in a timed game. We successfully created the unique and fun experience with all inputs and outputs controlled via a single micro-controller and custom circuits.

Project Requirements

Develop an interactive game for up to 4 participants. Each controls the supply of a single energy source over the course of a day. User chosen settings change the game play variability and show how custom demand changes the inputs required.

Technology Used

Arduino micro controller. Custom PCB board. Low-power analog/digital circuitry.  LED lighting.

Time Line

Developed over 6 months.
