Tasked to upgrade an existing Spirit of St Louis replica cockpit into an actual flight simulator, macMonkey Digital Studios built an exciting, interactive experience from an off-the-shelf video game and custom replica parts. Recreating the plane’s window and tiny periscope viewport integrated with real controls, flight instruments, and gauges, we transformed an old ‘rumble seat’ simulation into a realistic cockpit experience of Charles Lindbergh’s historic 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.
Visitors can recreate Lucky Lindy’s difficult take-off from Roosevelt Field, just clearing the telephone wires at end of the runway; attempt to navigate through a huge mid-Atlantic storm; and finally fly over Paris ‘The City of Lights’ exactly as it looked in 1927, circling the beautifully lit up Eiffel Tower at dusk, and finally landing at a unique 3D modeled simulation of Le Bourget airfield specifically created for this project. The simulator is one of the historic site’s star attractions and integrated into its school field trip curriculum.
